By Request...

After many, many requests for the lyrics and chords for “Through The Garden” – a song written in 1963 by my mother Frances Hurst (and father Ed Hurst – but he passed away in 1975, and never knew this song was recorded nor was performed outside our home), I decided to have it available here on my website. I typically don’t do this for copyright and intellectual properties reasons, but this song is wholly owned by my mother and myself (I added the second verse), and published in my publishing catalogue – NN Guido Music Publishing.

Mom, I, and our family are happy folks like the song, we never thought it would turn out to be as popular as it is, or one of my most requested songs when I perform. Enjoy the song, and sing it when you like – except for recording it – then you must have a release and an agreement to pay mom royalties for sales.

Thank you,
Jim

Key of D

Verse 1       Once you were my sweetheart darlin’
In our blissful childhood days
But then we had to part dear
You have gone so far away

Chorus                 We wandered out through the garden
And all the flowers were in bloom
There you whispered how you loved me
Underneath that golden moon

Verse 2       When you left I got so lonely
I thought my heart would break in two
Don’t you know I love you only
There is no other one but you

Repeat Chorus

Verse 3        I hope that you’re not gone forever
And that we may meet someday
Oh I know we’d be so happy
I pray the Lord will let it be

Repeat Chorus

Repeat Chorus

Additionally...

FYI: For the “Intrepid” recording, I recorded this version in the key of D, capo placed on the second fret and playing out of the C shape. My dad played the song in the ‘Carter’ style – meaning playing chords while picking out the melody (as Mother Maybelle Carter made famous, as well as Doc Watson, and others), but it wasn’t called that back then. Dad just played what he heard, and what fit this song. I feel I must play it this way… it’s in my DNA!

I also played the chorus with a short 4 chord or G after the 5 chord or A in the first and second lines.

That looks like this:

D1                     A5  G4                 D1
We wondered out through the garden

                    A5          G4         D1
And all the flowers were in bloom

This is just an artistic choice, Dad didn’t play this. It was written and played originally as a “2 chord wonder” song, and I love it that way. Sometimes in my performances, I play one of the choruses the way dad used to, in his memory.

I’m sorry but as of now, there are no sheet music or tablature versions available.

Enjoy!
